Why is First Aid Training important?
Training people in first aid equips them with the knowledge to respond effectively to emergencies. It helps employers and employees to be more safety conscious in the workplace, reducing casualties and incidents. Training by a professional also helps identify risks that could cause first aid incidents in the future. Educating people in first aid prepares them for situations that they may come across, empowering them to act efficiently.
As emergencies can happen at any place and at any time, it is vital that staff are trained, so that they can respond confidently and effectively in a crisis. The first few minutes of any emergency are the most crucial as they can significantly impact the patient’s condition. Proper first aid intervention can be the difference between a full recovery and a permanent injury. It also increases the chance of a patient surviving an emergency. First aid training is essential, as ultimately, first aid saves lives.

Does the law require First Aiders in the Workplace?
Yes, it is a legal requirement for workplaces to have first aiders. Since the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, the employer must ensure that the workplace has appropriate equipment, and personnel to administer effective first aid for their employees. This applies to all workplaces including self-employed and workplaces with less than 5 employees.
All workplaces are legally required to have an appointed first aid person. Their role is to administer first aid, and look after the first aid equipment, making sure it is stocked. Employers must also provide the appropriate equipment, allowing their injured and ill employees to receive immediate assistance. First aid information must also be provided and easily accessed by all employees, so they too can follow first aid procedure. Failing to comply with this law will result in prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
